ANDRZEJ DŁUŻNIEWSKI
GAMBOLS AND BURLESQUES

Gambols, 1963–1965, collage on paper,
various dimensions

The starting point for the series of 21 collages created between 2001 and
2011 was the 1964 work Manikin ‘K’ — Figure-head. The artist reproduced the silhouette of a black-handed figure cut out of floral wallpaper in Burlesques in various poses and configurations. Friese-like compositions with rows of figures with simplified shapes are full of humorous references to art history, literature, or everyday events.
